May 8th 1945: Birth of The free town of Careï
In 1945, local men decided to give the name “free town of Careï” to the valley and founded an association whose goals were charity and community.
Groupe Folklorique La Mentonnaise
The same year, a folk group was set up to animate the various local events.
They were called“Les Fruits d’Or” (the Golden Fruit) in reference to the cultivation of lemons.
May 15th, 1962 the group was called “La Mentonnaise”.
The Group is a member of :
- the National Confederation of French Folk Groups
- the “Etoile Civique” (Civic Star) – an institution of the French Academy that honors the associations that contribute to the enrichment of public heritage
- member for life of the Society in the Support of Good, that honors civic and social societies.
